A gentle transition from Java programming to Web Services using XML-RPC

چکیده

Exposing students to leading edge vocational areas of relevance such as Web Services can be difficult. We show a lightweight approach by embedding a key component of Web Services within a Level 3 BSc module in Distributed Computing. We present a ready to use collection of lecture slides and student activities based on XML-RPC. In addition we show that this material addresses the central topics in the context of web services as identified by Draganova (2003).

Loosely Connected RPC: An Approach for Extendable Interface of Web Services

To make distributed software systems evolve easily, it is desirable to make connections between services and clients loose. The recent success of Web based technologies may be attributed to the core characteristic, i.e. being more loosely connected than the traditional RPC technologies such as CORBA, DCOM and Java RMI. Web services are distributed systems built on the Web based technologies; ho...

Best Practices in Web Service Style, Data Binding and Validation for use in Data-Centric Scientific Applications

We provide a critical evaluation of the different Web Service styles and approaches to data-binding and validation for use in ‘data-centric’ scientific applications citing examples and recommendations based on our experiences. The current SOAP API’s for Java are examined, including the Java API for XML-based remote procedure calls (JAX-RPC) and Document style messaging. We assess the advantages...

A Web-based Interoperable Method for accessing e-learning Remote Repositories using directed XML-based Remote Procedure Calls

The objective of this paper is to present a commune standard web-based interface that allows different content owners to be networked through one single engine provided by an e-learning platform, that was developed in our laboratory [2], [3]. Each content owner keeps locally the contents of the platform and manages owned data without external interferences. The end user can make queries from a ...

Selecting the best web service

Web services are applications that communicate over open protocols such as HTTP using structured forms of XML such as the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP [17]) or Remote Procedure Calls for XML (XML-RPC [18]). There have been efforts to standardize a number of things: the Web Service Description Language (WSDL [5]) is a standard for describing web services’ syntax, and the Universal Descrip...

A Framework For Transitioning Enterprise Web Services From XML-RPC to REST

Web Services are defined by the W3C as “a software system designed to support interoperable machine to machine interaction over a network". There are however, several alternatives as to how Web Services can be implemented: WS-* and Plain Old XML (POX) are popular approaches that markup their RPC (Remote Procedure Call) based payloads with eXtensible Markup Language (XML). Both approaches can us...
